Even when you choose a custom color, it will just automatically make the active tab color a slightly lighter (and usually pretty indistinguishable) version of your selection. Click the 'Color and theme' tab and choose a color scheme. What I want to do is have the active tab color something vastly different, like green or white or something, so that it's easy to pick out at a glance, but when I go to the Color and Theme section of the 'Customize Chrome' area there doesn't appear to be a way to specifically select the second color, it's just automatically selected depending on the theme you choose. You can also change the color and theme of your Chrome browser from the 'Customize this page' pop-up.

This is because the active tab has a dark grey color that is pretty close to the black of the rest of the tabs and identical to the grey of the top area (not sure what it's officially called, but the bit with the URL, back/forward/refresh buttons, bookmark bar, etc.) So I like the Dark theme of Chrome, and switched my tab colors to the darkest option (basically black), but I've found that it can actually be pretty hard to see which tab is active at a glance (especially for a tab hoarder like myself).
